The council discussed a resolution to place a proposal for a 1/4% temporary municipal income tax levy on the November 2026 general election ballot. Key discussion points included the structural budget deficit caused by cuts at the state and federal levels, the impact of these cuts on service delivery, and the intended use of the tax revenue for police and fire services, neighborhood safety, equipment upgrades, violence interrupter programs, and addressing blight and infrastructure. Clarifications were provided regarding the nature of the tax as an earned income levy that would not affect retirees, the potential necessity of future layoffs if budget challenges persist, and the council's role in advancing the ballot initiative for voter determination.
